08 Mar The Ultimate Breakdown Of File Types
Once your project with Creative Whitt has been approved and finalized, you will be supplied with digital files which will be in different formats, so you have what you need to use your new branding anywhere you would like. However, all the different file types can be confusing. We’ve decided to create the ultimate guide of file types:
What is a .ai file?
An AI file is a file which can only be opened using Adobe Illustrator and is typically the source file for a logo. AI files are created using vectors, which unlike pixels can be stretched and shrunk as much as needed without losing quality. We recommend using AI files for professional printing such as banners, brochures or business cards.
What is a .psd file?
A PSD file is a file generated by Adobe Photoshop that when exported become the pixel form of an AI file. These files cannot be stretched and shrunk without quality loss. They can be easily edited using Adobe Photoshop to change colors or other elements. We do not recommend PSD files for professional printing.
What is a .pdf file?
A PDF file is an extremely common vector-based file used for various purposes. They can be edited using Adobe Illustrator and opened using Adobe Acrobat Reader (however you cannot modify it). PDF files are commonly used for professional printing.
What is a .jpg or .jpeg file?
A JPG or JPEG file is probably the most common graphics file type and is often used for pictures which you would upload to Facebook, Pinterest or any other social media site. JPG files are pixel based, meaning they cannot be stretched and shrunk without some quality loss in most instances. We do not recommend using JPG/JPEG files for professional printing.
What is a .png file?
A PNG file is another common graphics file type typically used on websites. PNG files can be exported with a transparent background, unlike JPG files. To be used on a website, the PNG file should be the exact size needed to avoid any quality loss or blurriness. We do not recommend using PNG files for professional printing.
